"I am not going to allow myself not to perform well just because I don't feel well. I am bulletproof to the extent that a lot of things can be thrown at me, but it's about how much I am prepared to let them affect me."

I learned a lot that summer, in a dusty studio shared with interesting old women and their grandchildren, sullen art majors, and a teacher  “somewhat a veteran of the Vietnam war,” an diabetic sage passing on the discipline of ceramics to his pupils. Surrounded by tubs of noxious goo that somehow, in the fiery inferno of an industrial kiln or even an ordinary trash can, burst into fireworks’ colors and shines and crackles on pieces of earth, I was humbled by the beauty that can emerge from the earth and human ingenuity.

This time of night, this time of life…I miss racing. I miss diving into a pool of calming blue-turned-white-water, seeing tranquility ripped up for the sake of personal growth, like children ravenously go through art supplies. I miss how the lanelines quivered, how the water would envelop me and welcome me and challenge me…I miss the blazing sun, feeling intensely vibrant and exhausted, the pain reminding me I’m alive; the accomplishment reminding me of purpose.I miss muffled cheers, having the world be focused for once and completely breakable: take it a 25, 50, 100 at a time. Develop and perfect the technique…breathing, style, mechanics. Refining race style to suit personal needs, practice, execution…silence, quiet, time for you to bring out what you’ve been working on and not hear others’ opinions. Time to listen to yourself and your body.Swimmingreminds me that I can do mostly anything;
the world is at your fingertips; choose your lane.

Grateful

for a boyfriend who loves me
and friends who are cray-lovable, and
in general I had a good birthday.
